Odysseus cave at island Mljet

Mljet lakes get solar-powered ships made in Croatia

Since recently, three solar-powered ships, a completely Croatian product, sail through the lakes of Mljet.

They are good because we can show in the National Park Mljet how we care about Croatian production, but above all about nature protection because they are ships that emit zero pollution.

Ivan Sršen, director of NP Mljet

Antun Radulj has been navigating the lakes of Mljet for 25 years.

I can tell you compared to everything so far, this is a spaceship! We have a little problem with the electric drive. We don’t hear that old diesel, so we watch behind us if the waterfront is “moving”, so we know we’re on our way!

Radulj

It glides silently. Visitors also disembark on the islet of Melita.

Radulj also adds how all three ships bear the names of their Venetians who died in the Homeland War, they guard them and take care of them.

Boats have an autonomy of 5 hours of sailing. They sail at a speed of 5 knots, they can pull 9 knots, but that is not necessary for the lake. In case it would be denser sailing or days without sun, they can be connected to the electrical connection, but we have not had the need so far.

Mljet National Park, the oldest protected marine area in the Mediterranean, is celebrating its 60th anniversary. The magical island of Odysseus is known for the phenomenon of salty Mljet lakes with a 400-year-old coral reef.

The magical island of Odysseus is known for the phenomenon of salt lakes of Mljet because they are connected to the open sea by the Solin channel and every 6 hours based on the tides the sea enters the lakes, every 6 hours it leaves the lake and creates this current under the big and small bridge.

Diana Dabelić, Head of the Department for Tourism and Promotion of NP Mljet

The Mljet submarine is as enchanting as the shot of the coral reef in the Great Lake. The stone coral stretches over 650 square meters. It is 300-400 years old.

What is famous about it is that it is full of life. A large number of fish breed, spawn, are a feeding ground for fish, the whole system of the Great and Small Lakes. Biodiversity is great, a real natural phenomenon.

dr.sc. Petar Kružić from the Faculty of Science in Zagreb

As many as three species of grouper live here.

The grouper breeds in the Great Lake, 90% of the groupers we have on Mljet breed in the Great Lake. Larger fish also come here. Goffs, barracudas, felons, little gophers who come in here feed and go out. It is quite frequent, inputs and outputs, it is a very special phenomenon. It is good that the biggest phenomenon is protection.

The team from the Zagreb Faculty of Science has been continuously monitoring the coral reef for twenty years. A major problem is the invasive alga Caulerpa Racemosa. It is cleaned at least twice a year.

The plan is to do a little better ridge morphology, photogrammetry to know exactly how big it is and that photogrammetry helped with the monitoring. The problem is the Pinna Nobilis as in the rest of the Adriatic. There are no survivors, they’re all gone.

Due to the pandemic, there is no big celebration of the 60th birthday of the Mljet National Park. However, the implementation of several projects financed from European funds is underway, to keep Odysseus’ island green.
