BRAČ – Sumartin will get a bigger port

With the new project, Sumartin will get a bigger port, and Split will get rid of summer congestion and the constant threat of traffic collapse.

The “Eastern Gate of Brač” project, related to the expansion of the existing Sumartin ferry pier needed to accommodate vessels with a capacity of up to 100 vehicles, was supported by the relevant state structures, we learn from its advocates – reports slobodnadalmacija.hr

Project for a new and larger port
A seriously thought-out content was thus given the wind for the first stage of realization. The fundamental step will be taken by the Municipality of Selca in Brač, which is responsible for obtaining the construction permit and completing the project documentation for the expansion of the local port. The implementation of such a plan, they claim in the Municipality of Selca, would consequently reduce the problem of summer traffic collapse in the Split Ferry Port, and huge crowds in the Supetar port during the frequent tourist months.

It was discussed the need to introduce a ferry with a capacity of one hundred vehicles on line 638 Sumartin – Makarska, and consequently determining the final location of the port for its reception. Makarska cannot meet such demand with its existing port, so the solution was found through the solution of moving the land port to a more acceptable place.

A better life on the island
Without a good road, without a ferry that can sail without problems even in storms and in the south, enabling the transport of a much larger number of vehicles in one direction, this part of the island has no relevant future. That is why the villagers of Selca are fighting for it.

– The “Eastern Gate of Brač” is not just a gate for us residents of the eastern part of the island. It is a project that will make life easier for the people of Split, especially during the peak tourist season, when the roads leading to the port turn into an anthill. Into a long column that stops circulation. Well, didn’t we witness this problem this summer, when an emergency vehicle was blocked in the traffic due to a terrible line in the direction of the Ferry Port. We are talking about dispersing island traffic to two locations, Supetar and Sumartin, to two ports that will carry the load equally. Shifting traffic to the east of Brač island would automatically reduce congestion in Supetar and Split, which is essentially a solution for a larger area – says Mayor Marijančević.

More broadly, traffic from the highway to the Central Dalmatian Islands would no longer be channelled exclusively towards the Dugopolje interchange. With adequate reception in port of Makarska, with a larger ferry, and with a modern port in Sumartin, many tourists would leave the Dugopolje exit behind. And through the tunnel of St. Ilija through Biokovo descended directly to the sea. In the physical sense, the eastern gate of Brač could most easily be compared to the vessels connected by law.

What does Sumartin get?
With the East Gate of Brač, Sumartin gets 150 parking spaces for the ferry, a new wider waiting ferry lane, an operational part of the coast, a port for the public transport of local importance, a covered waiting area for passengers, a port facility, a bus stop with a covered waiting area, a taxi rank, a public toilet and associated catering establishments. Towards the open sea, on the western side of the bay, there should be a place to accommodate six tourist boats and mini cruisers.
