Town of Pag

Islands Pag and Vir a surprise of this year’s summer season

Despite the challenges, the island of Pag is setting new tourist records this year as well. Namely, the medieval town of Pag is a tourist oasis on a stone island resembling the surface of the Moon.

In the uncertain tourist season, it tries to attract guests with its traditional offer, but also with some new tourist trump cards.

Vesna Karavanić, the director of the Tourist Board of Pag town says that Pag is known as a beautiful Mediterranean place that has its own soul with a lot of cultural monuments that are available to visitors.

The old town is the center of lacemaking, with a tradition of more than 6 centuries, for which the island of Pag is widely known.

Pag lacemaker Ivanka Benzija reminds us that Pag lace is very interesting and everyone admires it. Pag lace is sewn without a template, from the head and it is never the same, each one is unique.

Apart from lace, Pag is increasingly recognized in the world as a quality destination for tasting cheese.

Martina Pernar Škunca, a cheesemaker, points out that a Pag sheep eats grass from Pag pastures and that is what makes its milk, and thus cheese, special in every sense.

Pag cheese

Pag cheese would not be what it is without the pure Pag sea salt that has been stored for centuries in stone warehouses not far from the city center. Today, the Salt Museum is located in these warehouses. Even today, the process of salt production here in Pag has not changed much.

Vesna Karavanić adds that for the island, which is also called the Moon Island, they have started to develop the Pag outdoor project.

However, judging by the crowds on the narrow cobbled streets of Pag, the combination of traditional and new sports offers has obviously become irresistible to visitors this tourist season.

From the island that needed to be torn down to the champion of the season

In addition to about 5,000 permanent residents, Vir currently has about 22,000 tourists and holiday homeowners. They consider the season top-notch because they have already achieved 95% of the reference year 2019 so far.

The realized traffic is even higher than in the pre-pandemic seasons, and the island, which was once a term for illegal construction, is today one of the tourist records.

From cheap accommodation for 40 euros per apartment to 4-star apartments, which cost about 250 euros per night – booking is still great.
