Kaprije island – Works in the port in progress

Last week, works on drilling the foundation cups of the piles were completed. They represent the underwater part of the construction of the new pier on the island of Kaprije. At the end of drilling, the process of concreting the piles has started.

Šibenik-Knin County Port Authority says the submarine part of the structure consists of a total of 18 piles designed in two rows on which the structure of the pier with a floor plan dimensions of 55.0 × 6.0 m will be placed. Furthermore, 18 piles are embedded in the parent limestone rock in the length of 4.5 to 5.0 m, depending on the position in the structure. The fifth part of the pile is made in a diameter of 140 cm, and the free part (the part that passes through the sea) in a diameter of 120 cm. It is expected that the concreting of all piles will be completed by the end of August, followed by construction and installation of pier elements.

They add that the completion of drilling the foundation cups of the piles will reduce noise levels, dusting and occasional visual pollution of the sea with earth material/excavation.

Port Authority points out that the start of construction and establishment of the construction site for such a facility on the island is an extremely demanding and challenging job that depends on many factors that sometimes cannot be influenced, despite careful planning. Port Authority thanks the residents of Kaprije for their cooperation, patience and understanding that the benefits the new pier brings are many times greater than the possible current inconveniences.

The new ferry port, they note, will enable the use of ferries of the deeper draft, more stable and more resistant to weather conditions, which will significantly reduce the number of cancelled lines.

Port Authority concludes that the construction of a ferry port outside the town centre will ensure easier manoeuvring and docking of ferries. It will also reduce traffic congestion in the area of the port and the town centre. At the same time, the noise level in the centre of the town will be reduced and the quiet pedestrian zone within which there are beaches, catering facilities, cultural and other facilities will be maintained.

The project ‘Construction of a ferry port in the port of Kaprije‘ was co-financed by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund, and is implemented by the Port Authority of Šibenik-Knin County. The total value of the project is HRK 24,072,345.21. The total duration of the project is 42 months.
